A Special Issue of the journal Optimization Letters on Optimization Models and Solution Techniques (Patrizia Daniele and Laura Scrimali Editors) is open for all contributions in trends and new perspectives on critical and challenging topics in complex systems, bridging the researcher–practitioner gap.

The special issue shows the state of the art knowledge related to optimization, decisions science and problem solving methods, as well as their applications in industrial and territorial systems. It highlights real life problems that are challenging and worthwhile, using models and methods based on continuous and discrete optimization, network optimization, simulation and system dynamics, heuristics, metaheuristics, artificial intelligence, analytics, and multiple-criteria decision making. Recent advances in information technology enablethe treatment of big data volumes, devisingeffective solution methods toward better decisions. The volume can be an essential reference for both researchers and practitioners in optimization.

Paper submission and review

Submissions to the special issue must include new, unpublished, original research. Papers must not have been previously published or currently submitted elsewhere. The quantitative results of the studies are expected to be supported by a robust statistical analysis demonstrating the significance of the results. Extended versions of selected papers presented during ODS2018 (http://www.airoconference.it/ods2018/) will be considered too. The extended version must contain at least 40% new content compared to the workshop version. Papers should be submitted electronically using the Optimization Letters submission system and following the instructions for authors. When submitting, authors are requested to choose “Optimization Models and Solution Techniques” in the manuscript type to indicate that the paper is intended for this special issue.Guest editors will make an initial determination of the suitability and scope of all submissions. The submissions will be blind reviewed by at least two reviewers. The final decisions for all manuscripts will be taken by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal at the end of the review process.
